President Andri Radjoelina of Madagascar has stated that an attempted coup is in progress, following a declaration by the elite army unit Kapsat that it has taken control of the military. The unit has called for Radjoelina to step down, amid ongoing youth-led protests against the government. 

Radjoelina's office issued a statement informing both the nation and the international community of the alleged illegal attempt to seize power by force. The Minister of Armed Forces has acknowledged an officer chosen by a military group supporting the demonstrators as the new army chief.
