Westpac has become the latest of the big four banks to cut jobs, announcing it will reduce its teller and personal banker roles as part of a major push into digital banking.

Westpac has informed staff that it will reduce approximately 200 teller and personal banker positions in its retail banking operations over the coming year. These roles are expected to be replaced with concierge-type positions to assist customers with digital banking services such as ATMs, the bank's app, and website.

The move is part of Westpac's broader digital-first strategy, which is being implemented across its national branch network. The Finance Sector Union has criticised the decision, calling it callous and short-sighted, and expressed concerns about job losses disguised as digital transformation. Westpac maintains it is investing in retraining staff and aims to redeploy some employees to other roles, including its home finance team.

Likely replaced with concierge type roles to help customers use its ATMs, app and website. It plays into Westpac's digital first approach, which is being rolled out in branches nationally. Times have changed. It's convenient for people. We don't want to live in a computer world, we want to live face to face. Do you trust online banking? No. No. It's all part of a broader trend that's seen many bank branches close down. Cash continues to be an important part of our economy. Now increasingly more difficult to access, and it's often older Aussies paying the price. The measure of a society is how they treat their most vulnerable. Just invest in people, and invest in people that actually have conversations and relationships with older Australians. Instead, many people could soon be out of work. The onus is on the banks to explain them to the people involved. The finance sector union labelling the move callous and short-sighted. With sweeping redundancies already on the table at Westpac, the union fears this is a jobs cull disguised as a digital transformation. But the bank insists it is investing in retraining its staff for the future. The nation's second biggest lender is focusing on just that, and wants 200 bankers to boost its loan book. It says 33 tellers have already shifted from branches to the home finance team earlier this year. It's hoped, but not guaranteed, current employees can fill those spots. Tallulah Thompson, 10 News.
