Both nations have accused each other of breaching the truce, with accounts of explosions and gunfire emerging from multiple cities in the region. India’s foreign secretary has called on Pakistan to halt what he described as violations and stated that Indian armed forces have received instructions to respond.

The ceasefire was established after discussions between the directors-general of military operations from both countries. Celebrations were reported in Pakistan following an announcement by US President Donald Trump on social media regarding an end to the fighting. Residents expressed relief, emphasising the importance of dialogue over conflict.

The recent escalation began after India accused Pakistan of orchestrating an attack on tourists in Indian-administered Kashmir, resulting in 26 deaths. Pakistan denied involvement. In response, India conducted operations against what it identified as terrorist hideouts in Pakistan. Pakistani authorities asserted that those killed in the attacks were innocent civilians and retaliated by targeting Indian sites.

Both governments continue to claim the disputed Kashmir territory, an issue that has persisted for decades. Observers have noted that both countries possess nuclear weapons, which increases the urgency for a durable ceasefire.

Pakistan said the dozens who were killed were innocent civilians and retaliated by attacking Indian targets.
