The measure passed after extended debate and attempts by Democrats to delay or block the vote, including leaving the state to prevent a quorum.

The map now moves to the Texas Senate, where it is also expected to pass. This development is part of a wider national trend, with both Republicans and Democrats in various states pursuing redistricting plans that could shift the balance of power in Congress.

And we are following breaking news right now. The Republican-controlled Texas House has just approved a redistricting map tonight, a new redistricting map. The plans will likely result in the Republican Party gaining five additional seats in Congress. The new map is also facing harsh pushback from the Democratic minority in Texas. Let's bring in CBS News reporter Erica Brown, joining us live from Capitol Hill. Erica, great to see you. This has been a very drawn-out fight, a long drawn-out fight. What can you tell us about how it happened, how this vote actually occurred, and what comes next? Well, Elizabeth, as you know, the House and Texas state legislature has passed this measure, and an 88 to 52 vote in it now heads to the state Senate, where it is also expected to pass. But it was a long road getting here. This measure was delayed by more than two weeks after Democrats had floated various measures to try to block and delay this measure from even coming up for a vote. Initially, some of the state Democrats had fled Texas to prevent a quorum being formed in order for this measure to be taken up in the state legislature. And then once they returned to the House, and this had been taken up, and there had been hours of debate all day today, they pursued various measures to try to delay this vote by proposing various amendments and asking parliamentary questions. But as expected, this vote has passed the House, and will likely pass of the Senate in a vote tomorrow. But this is all part of that larger push by President Trump to try to gain more Republican seats that would keep the House of Representatives here in Washington in Republican control that will be critical for his agenda in the second half of his second term. Elizabeth? Yeah, Eric, I mean, this has sparked redistricting plans in states across the country. What can you tell us about who could be next to file redistricting plans? That's right, and all eyes right now are on California as they take up a redistricting plan of their own in a vote in their own state legislature tomorrow. And if that passes, the California State House will then head to the ballot where voters will then approve the plan for a new congressional map that could give Democrats an advantage in California with up to five additional seats. But Democrats and Republicans around the country are looking beyond Texas and California. Republicans are looking at states like Indiana, Missouri, and Florida, potentially for redistricting plans that could benefit Republicans. And Democrats are looking to counter that, potentially with states like Illinois, Maryland for the 2026 midterms, and potentially even New York for the 2028 election. So here you have Democrats and Republicans looking at multiple states and multiple measures that they can consider to draw new congressional maps that could give their respective parties an advantage and even more seats in Congress.
