We begin tonight with a new ground offensive in Gaza. Israel is calling up 60,000 reservists as its long-awaited assault to take control of Gaza City, home to more than half a million Palestinians, begins. The move comes amid a deepening humanitarian crisis across the entire Gaza Strip. Deborah Pata reports on the military escalation. Most of the 60,000 reservists will be sent on active duty here, to Gaza City, home to around 600,000 Palestinians. We thought there'd be a truce, said Mohamed Al-Fadi. Instead, we woke up to the news that thousands more soldiers will be sent here. The IDF is not waiting for the new reservists, saying the first phase of the wider offensive to seize Hamas strongholds has begun. Israeli airstrikes hit a crowded marketplace today, killing several. Gaza remains the most dangerous place in the world to be a child. Across the rest of the territory, strikes have not let up. My brother's children were sleeping, said this man. Was this little one carrying a weapon? Many Palestinians say there is not much left to destroy, as Israel already controls 75% of Gaza. But every day, rescue workers still race to save the injured from the rubble, like Sejar Hamat, who was pulled from this collapsed building overnight. Humanitarian organizations are worried that this wider offensive will further disrupt aid delivery at a time when Gaza is still in the grip of a catastrophic hunger crisis. The new offensive comes even as mediators continue to push for a ceasefire. Those 60,000 reservists are expected to report for duty next month, but the plan has come under heavy criticism from many hostage families who have said it will be a death sentence for their loved ones still in captivity.
