Students at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee are preparing for an increase in tuition after the Board of Regents approved a rise of up to 5% for the 2025-26 academic year. This translates to an average increase of $382 across the Universities of Wisconsin, with UW-Milwaukee students seeing a $439 jump. 

Many students are balancing work and studies to manage the higher costs, with some expressing concern about the growing financial burden. Despite the increase, Wisconsin's in-state undergraduate tuition has risen less sharply over the past decade compared to neighboring states, such as Michigan.

It's National College Savings Month, a time to focus on planning for the cost of higher education. I'm Meryl Hubbard on UW-Milwaukee's campus, talking to students about how they save for college and tips they have for future students. When I get my check, I like to put half into my savings and then give myself a little bit of amount to spend on myself. But just budget correctly, that's really it. Put aside what you need first before you actually spend it. Tolulope Ogenle is juggling the life of a student and working part-time overnight shifts as a caregiver. She says she's covering the cost of her books as well as some of her tuition. But tuition is more costly this year after a state budget deal included more funding for the W-System. In July, the Board of Regents for the Universities of Wisconsin approved a tuition increase of up to 5% for the 2025-26 academic year, which turns into an average jump of $382 for tuition. For UW-Milwaukee specifically, tuition rises by $439. I mean, I already have loans I have to take out and stuff like that, so it's already hard. I don't know why they brought the money up. It's already hard enough to pay for school by yourself. Tolulope says she loves helping kids and is studying to be a pediatrician, even though it means more years of classes and more spending on school. Reporting in Milwaukee, Meryl Hubbard, TMJ4 News. And while parents and students will see the cost of college rise at UW Universities, Wisconsin does have the lowest percentage change of in-state undergrad tuition compared to neighboring states in the Midwest. For example, Michigan went up by nearly 52% in the last decade compared to nearly 8% in Wisconsin over the same time period. This is all according to the UW Board of Regents.
