As a result, new congressional maps must be drawn and adopted in accordance with deadlines set by the lower court and the lieutenant governor's office. The redistricting process must comply with Proposition 4, which mandates certain standards for the maps, and the legislature is required to participate in this process.

Breaking news now. You remember the ongoing controversy surrounding political boundaries in Utah and the redrawing of political maps. The Utah Supreme Court issued a ruling on redistricting this afternoon. Let's get to FOX 13 News political reporter Ben Winslow on Utah's Capitol Hill. Ben. Well, in a unanimous ruling without hearing any arguments, the Utah Supreme Court has just rejected the Utah State Legislature's request to halt the redistricting process. Now, the legislature, you'll recall, had been appealing a lower court judge's ruling that set some strict deadlines for new congressional maps. They wanted the Supreme Court to block it. The court is refusing to do so. The justices say in the opinion I just obtained, quote, They argue that the district court abused its discretion in denying their request for a stay of the court's injunctive order pending the exhaustion of any appeals. But their arguments are focused on the remedial process, not the court's denial of their stay request. Thus, they have not shown that the district court abused its discretion in denying their request. Accordingly, we deny the petition for extraordinary relief. Now, what this means is the redistricting process goes forward. And, of course, this just happened. We are still trying to gather reaction from leaders here on Capitol Hill, legislative leaders, to see what, if anything, they plan to do next. It's worth pointing out November 10th is the deadline the lieutenant governor's office has set, saying that they need new maps by then. The redistricting process, we are expecting a special session with new maps to be voted on in early October. Bob, back to you. Ben, is there anything the legislature could do at this point to either nullify or somehow change this ruling and its effect by the Utah Supreme Court? Absent getting maybe a federal question, filing a federal lawsuit, and taking it to the U.S. Supreme Court, rather, and that's on a very quick timeline, unlikely. What this means is that the redistricting process is going to have to go forward, and they're going to have to draw new maps. And those new maps will have to be adopted in October in order for them to be presented back to the lower court to see where they stand, if they meet the threshold of the judge's ruling regarding Proposition 4. And then they have to be in place by November 10th. And the redistricting committee will be involved in this process? They have to be. I mean, that's a part of this, is the legislature has to be involved. But the judge has specifically said, the lower court judge, I should point out, has specifically said that Proposition 4 is the law, and therefore they have to follow that. So it has to meet certain metrics required by this court ruling dealing with Proposition 4, which, of course, created an independent redistricting committee. You'll recall the legislature modified those rules, those things, and said that you now have to, you do have to draw these maps that are consistent with some of those principles, even though you may not necessarily have an independent redistricting commission involved. A lot to digest here, but some very important news. And, of course, we will let you get to the task of getting reaction from the legislative leaders on this. And, of course, a lot more reporting to come on this.
