A 17-year-old male already in custody has been charged with murder for the deaths of three young girls in a frenzied knife attack in Southport, UK police said on Wednesday, while the rampage unleashed demonstrations in London with echoes of blame on immigrants.

A 17-year-old male has been charged with the murder of three young girls following a knife attack in Southport, UK, according to police. The attacker was already in custody on suspicion of murder and attempted murder. Authorities clarified that the suspect, who cannot be named due to his age, was born in Britain and has no links to terrorism.

The attack has led to protests, some of which have turned violent, both in Southport and London. Demonstrations outside the prime minister's residence in London saw thousands shouting slogans. Misleading information online suggested the suspect was a radical Islamist migrant, fueling some of the unrest. 

Merseyside Police Chief Constable Serena Kennedy emphasized the importance of not prejudicing the active criminal proceedings against the suspect. She also noted police preparedness for further violence. Clashes between protesters and police in Southport resulted in injuries to over 50 officers and the arrest of more than 100 people. 

The office of British Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced that he would meet with senior police leaders to offer the government's full support after the recent incidents of violence and public disorder.

The attack has sparked sometimes violent protests in Southport and now in London, seemingly fueled by false information online that the suspect is a radical Islamist migrant. The latest one, just outside the prime minister's residence at 10 Downing Street Wednesday night, with thousands shouting, save our kids, we want our country back, and stop the boats, as well as English football chants. However police say that the suspect was born in Britain and had no links to terrorism. And the 17-year-old, who cannot be named for legal reasons as he is under 18, will appear in Liverpool Magistrate's Court on Thursday. He was already in police custody on suspicion of murder and attempted murder after the bloody rampage on Monday at a Taylor Swift yoga and dance workshop. The three girls killed were aged six to nine. Merseyside Police Chief Constable Serena Kennedy stressed on Wednesday authorities were legally restricted in what information they could share about the suspect. We remind all concerned that criminal proceedings against the defendant are active and that he has a right to a fair trial. It is extremely important that there should be no reporting, commentary or sharing of information online which could in any way prejudice these proceedings. Kennedy also sought to assure Southport residents that they were bracing for further violence in the days ahead. The day after the stabbing, there had been violent clashes between protesters and police in Southport, amid online speculation over the suspect's origins, resulting in injuries to over 50 officers, with police arresting more than 100 people for related offences. Police believe they were supporters of a right-wing anti-Islam, anti-immigration group. The office of British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said he will meet senior police leaders on Thursday after the clashes outside his Downing Street office and residence, and that he'd use the meeting to quote, offer them the government's full backing following multiple high-profile incidents of extreme violence and public disorder on our streets.
