Typhoon Ragasa, described as the most powerful storm globally this year, has struck several regions in East and Southeast Asia, including Hong Kong, Shenzhen, Macau, Taiwan, and the northern Philippines. The storm has led to severe flooding, with torrents of water damaging infrastructure and forcing over 700,000 people to evacuate. 

Authorities responded by docking ships, lowering dam water levels, and cancelling more than 1,000 flights, resulting in global travel disruptions. In Taiwan, an overflowing barrier lake inundated a town, while in the Philippines, rescue crews saved stranded residents and 13 fishermen from a capsized vessel. The storm continues to move west, with millions remaining on alert as it approaches Vietnam and possibly Laos.

The fury of Typhoon Ragesa on full show. Torrents of water smashing through a hotel as the most powerful storm in the world so far this year batters Hong Kong, Shenzhen and Macau in southern China. Ahead of the storm, hundreds of ships were docked, dam water levels lowered and more than 700,000 people evacuated as those who stayed hunkered down. More than 1,000 flights have been cancelled, causing disruptions worldwide. In Taiwan, a barrier lake overflowed on Tuesday, sending a wall of water into a town, turning roads into churning rivers. A woman forced to cling to a pillar in a market as floodwaters rose. Earlier, huge waves and torrential rain hit the northern Philippines... ..where rescue crews were kept busy saving stranded residents and pulling 13 fishermen from a capsized vessel. A surge of water was strong, said this man, as the clean-up begins in Apalit, north of Manila. From above, the size and power of this storm is clear. This footage is from the International Space Station as the crew flew above the eye of Typhoon Ragesa. And the satellite images show this system barrelling through the northern Philippines, below Taiwan, as it tracks towards China. Millions of people still on edge, with the storm expected to continue heading west, reaching Vietnam and possibly Laos later this week. Harvey Biggs, 10 News.
