After passing through the Philippines, the storm is forecast to move south of Hong Kong and towards Guangdong province in mainland China, with authorities warning of potential flooding and rising sea levels.

In response, Hong Kong has suspended schools and cancelled flights, while residents stock up on supplies and reinforce their homes. Similar preparations are underway in Shenzhen, China, as scientists highlight the role of climate change in intensifying such storms and urge regional governments to remain vigilant.

Schools in Hong Kong have been suspended for at least two days. Flights in and out of the territory have been cancelled. Residents rushed to stock up on food before the storm's arrival. With hurricane-force winds expected, this store sold more than 200 rolls of masking tape as residents reinforced their windows. Kwan Sook Lang has owned the store for 30 years. Of course I'm worried. One concern is the safety of the shop and another is the potential loss of goods. If there's damage, it really hurts my business. It's all money after all. Authorities warned of flooding in low-lying areas, including the seaside neighbourhood in Kowloon. Authorities here in Hong Kong are taking no chances. The sea level is forecast to rise by at least two metres along coastal areas, so sandbags are being laid to help prevent any flooding. Drainage robots were put in place as businesses shut up shop. Scientists say climate change is contributing to more intense typhoons making landfall, and governments in the region need to be prepared. Because of the intensity of typhoon, it's much related to the water level that can come ashore. So if you have a more intense typhoon, the amount of water that can be pushed ashore is a lot more, and as a result of that, you can see more flooding in the coastal areas. Across the border in the Chinese city of Shenzhen, people stockpiled food and supplies ahead of the storm's arrival, as authorities urged people to stay indoors.
