The incident has deeply affected the local community and the wider police force, with authorities expressing condolences and support for the victims' families and colleagues. Local schools were placed in lockdown and residents were advised to stay indoors as the search continues.

The gunman fled the scene and remains on the run with his wife and children. We don't want things like that happening to anyone, but police officers, come on. It's just awful news where everyone's devastated. The Pawpunka Primary School was placed into lockdown and residents told to stay inside as police carried out a wide-scale search. Heavily armed units have swarmed the area, supported by the Air Wing, and tactical police from New South Wales are on their way to assist. We will do everything to bring this person into custody so that your community is safe. The tiny town with a population of less than 1,500 is now known nationwide. Today has been a day of deep sorrow and shock for our community. The local mayor says Victoria Police has the backing of the community.
