Federal investigators are examining the collision of two Delta regional jets that occurred while taxiing at LaGuardia Airport in New York. The incident involved flight 5155, which was preparing for departure to Roanoke with 32 people on board, and flight 5047, which had just arrived from Charlotte carrying 61 people. 

The collision resulted in visible damage to both aircraft, including a mangled wing and a shattered cockpit window. One flight attendant sustained minor injuries. Preliminary data indicates that flight 5155 was instructed by air traffic control to yield but still collided with the other jet. Delta has apologized to passengers and emphasized its commitment to safety.

Federal investigators are now looking at the crumpled and banged up bodies of two Delta jets that clanged into each other while taxiing at New York City's LaGuardia Airport last night. CBS News senior transportation correspondent Chris Van Cleve reports on what may have caused the collision. Delta says that plane, bound for Roanoke with 32 people on board, was taxiing to the runway when it collided with flight 5047 just before 10 p.m. You guys did clip, correct? Yeah, we did. Their right wing clipped our nose and the cockpit. Flight 5047 had just landed from Charlotte with 61 on board, including Annunziato. Video of that plane shows deep gashes to the nose and a shattered cockpit window. Delta says one person, a flight attendant, suffered minor injuries. Shouldn't they have seen the other plane? Yeah, that's a big mystery right now. Former NTSB chair Robert Sumwalt. Even though air traffic controllers issue taxi instructions, the pilots still have the responsibility to look out for anything else. Preliminary flight data indicates flight 5155 was traveling about 23 miles an hour, while 5047 was moving about 10 miles an hour when the collision occurred. The FAA says flight 5155 was told to yield by controllers. Flight 5155, ground, 13, taxi, Alpha, Echo, hold short of 4, and Mike, give way to company. And those pilots acknowledged that instruction from air traffic controls shortly before the accident. Delta says safety is its top priority and apologized to passengers. These sorts of incidences are rare, but they do happen. In fact, just over a year ago, two other Delta planes collided on a taxiway in Atlanta.
