Police reported that highway patrol officers had spotted the stolen vehicle speeding shortly before the crash occurred. The collision left one passenger from the Holden Cruze in serious but stable condition under police guard in hospital. Investigators believe speed was a significant factor, and early indications suggest the stolen vehicle may have been on the wrong side of the road, though this is yet to be confirmed. Professional standards police are overseeing the investigation, as is standard when officers are near the scene of a crash.

It's carnage to be honest, it's horrific, you've got two fatal injuries that were completely avoidable, people have made poor decisions. Highway patrol officers spotted the stolen car in Toolan Vale this morning around 9.40am. They were making an unrelated stop and the Holden went speeding by, they went to chase it down and came across this horror crash scene. It's awful, it's awful to see people losing their lives on roads like this. It's pretty devastating to be honest, it's a very big shock, especially not even hearing it, so coming out here, seeing all this stuff is a pretty big shock. A passenger in the Holden survived the crash. He was taken to hospital in a serious but stable condition and he's under police guard. Officers believe the car he was in swerved leading up to the crash. It does appear that the stolen vehicle is on the incorrect side of the road at this point but again, that's yet to be 100% determined. Investigators are still working out exactly how fast the stolen Holden was travelling but they have little doubt speeding was a factor because of the wreckage left behind. From the debris and the collision scene, well above the speed limit I'd suggest. Professional standards police are overseeing the investigation which is normal procedure when officers are so close to a crash.
