A major earthquake with a magnitude of 8.8 has struck off the far eastern coast of Russia, prompting tsunami warnings for Russia, Japan, Alaska, and Hawaii. This is the strongest earthquake recorded globally since 2011. 

Japan's meteorological agency has warned that waves could reach up to 3 meters, and residents in affected regions are being advised to evacuate to higher ground or designated evacuation centers. Following the initial quake, a series of strong aftershocks have been reported in Russia.

Tsunami warnings triggered after major earthquake

Tsunami warnings have been issued for parts of Russia, Japan and Alaska as well as all of Hawaii. A massive 8.8 magnitude earthquake struck off Russia's remote and sparsely populated far eastern coast. The quake is the strongest on the planet since 2011 when a 9.0 magnitude earthquake hit northeast Japan, triggering a devastating tsunami. Japan's meteorological agency has warned of waves up to 3 meters or nearly 10 feet. People in areas where a tsunami warning has been issued should immediately evacuate to high-rise buildings or evacuation centers. A series of powerful aftershocks have hit Russia following the quake.
