Each day brings new destruction, death, and extreme hunger in Gaza. The images of misery and desperation have prompted outrage across the globe. But now, after nearly 22 months of war, human rights groups inside Israel are accusing their own government of genocide against the Palestinians. We call this report our genocide, because that's what it is, a genocide committed against people who live here by the people who live here. And their reports, published Monday, the rights groups B'Tselem and Physicians for Human Rights Israel accused the Israeli government of causing mass displacement and deliberate starvation of Palestinians in Gaza. Under international law, to be genocide, there has to be proof of intent. And the reports cite remarks from government officials, including a former defense minister who has said Israel was fighting, quote, human animals in Gaza, and other Israeli politicians who have said their goal was to drive all Palestinians out of the territory. Systematic destruction of the health care system, denial of access to food, blocking of medical evacuations, and using humanitarian aid to advance military targets all indicate a clear pattern of conduct, a pattern that reveals intent. Charges Israel denies. We strongly reject the accusation. It is baseless. There is no intent. It simply doesn't make sense for a country to send in 1.9 million tons of aid, most of that being food, if there is an intent of genocide. At the end of 2023, South Africa filed charges of genocide against Israel at the International Court of Justice, which has yet to issue a ruling.
