With numerous countries facing an Aug. 1 trade agreement deadline, officials in the Trump administration say China could get an extension while negotiations continue.

Donald Trump has signed an order to impose tariffs imports into the U.S. from countries including China, Mexico and Canada.

The Trump administration has extended a 90-day trade truce with China, which is expected to be approved by President Trump. This agreement would ensure continued American access to critical rare earth minerals and may lead to further trade deals before an upcoming deadline. 

Meanwhile, Canadian officials are negotiating with the U.S. to prevent the imposition of new tariffs on Canadian goods not covered by existing trade agreements. While the U.S. ambassador to Canada expressed optimism about reaching a mutually beneficial agreement, concerns remain that tariffs could be unilaterally increased if a deal is not reached. Despite ongoing trade tensions, the U.S. economy has remained resilient, though analysts continue to monitor economic data for signs of broader impact.

Trump officials suggest potential tariff truce with China

Donald Trump is leaving Europe with a bit of a swagger. And it's not hard to see why. A series of trade agreements have emboldened the Trump administration. His deputies extended a trade truce with China that Trump is expected to sign off on this week. I think that the Chinese were surprised by the magnitude of the Japan deal. By the magnitude and the terms of the European deal. That 90-day Chinese truce would ensure American access to critical rare earth minerals and could set the stage for more deals to come before the president's August 1st deadline, now just days away. I think the trade deals are working out very well, hopefully for everybody. But for the United States, they're very, very good. Canadian officials are hoping to reach a deal to avert new, higher tariffs on Canadian products entering the U.S. Trump is threatening to impose 35% tariffs on all Canadian goods not covered by CUSMA on August 1st. Dominic LeBlanc, the federal minister responsible for U.S. trade and the Canadian ambassador are holding talks in Washington this week ahead of that deadline. Last week, Trump sounded pessimistic about the prospects of such a deal. August 1st is going to come and we will have most of our deals finished, if not all. We haven't really had a lot of luck with Canada. I think Canada could be one where they'll just pay tariffs. Please welcome Ambassador Hoekstra. In Winnipeg on Tuesday, the U.S. ambassador to Canada added a small dose of optimism to the mix. Hopefully very soon we will be able to outline an agreement that is good for the United States and is also good for Canada to reframe exactly what that relationship is going to look like with Canada. It will change, but I am very optimistic. I'm passionate about the Canadian-American relationship. But the clock is ticking here and there's a very real concern that Trump will make good on this threat and just unilaterally hike that tariff rate on Friday. Peter, the U.S. economy is holding up pretty well in spite of the tariffs. How does that factor into all of this? In a couple of pretty important ways. Everyone said there was going to be real economic pain for both the global economy and the U.S. economy. So far, at least, that hasn't emerged. Trump and his team have used that as evidence that they were right all along and that the experts were wrong. But we're going to be watching just a flood of economic data this week for a sense of whether that pain has been averted entirely or merely delayed. Thanks, Peter. You bet.
