A magnitude 8.7 earthquake occurred off the east coast of Russia, prompting tsunami concerns across the Pacific. Hawaii is under a tsunami warning, with emergency officials urging residents in coastal evacuation zones to take immediate action due to the expectation of destructive waves.

The entire Hawaiian Island chain is under warning, with waves potentially reaching heights of 1 to 3 meters (approximately 3 to 9 feet) above the tideline. The Aleutian Islands and mainland Alaska are expected to be impacted first, followed by Hawaii, where the northwestern islands may experience the largest waves. Authorities continue to monitor the situation and provide updates.

Let's get back to breaking news. A magnitude 8.7 earthquake off the east coast of Russia is leading to tsunami concerns concerns here in the US. There is a tsunami watch for the entire West Coast of the mainland United States, and Hawaii is now under a tsunami warning which is an elevated alert. Oahu Emergency Management sent. Just sent out this tweet saying quote, take action destructive tsunami waves are expected evacuate. Coastal areas in primary evacuation zone. I want to bring in Paul Hagen. OK, so there's a difference between watch and warning. That a warning that's serious watch means possible warning means expected to happen or currently happening. This is still something that's a few hours from reaching the coastline of Hawaii, depending on where in the Hawaiian island chain that you're talking about, but we're talking about this 8.7 earthquake. For context, the one in 2004, the day after Christmas that disrupted the tsunami that hit Indonesia and Thailand and India. That was 9.1, so not that much higher in magnitude than what occurred off the East Coast of Russia. The Aleutian Islands are going to get it first then mainland Alaska and then Hawaii. Northwestern Hawaii, those islands that are farther in the chain are going to get it first and likely worst potential for waves more than 10 feet above the tideline, pushing farther and farther inland. That's a significant concern. Most likely scenario, according to the tsunami warning is for 1 to 3 meter, so that's roughly 3 feet to 9 foot waves farther down the Hawaiian island chain. That would include Oahu, Maui, Kauai and the Big Island of Hawaii. And depending on exactly the topography of where that makes, landfall is going to have a big impact on it as well. And we're just hearing now that the entire Hawaiian Islands chain is also under tsunami warning and the expected time of arrival of those waves could be around 717 this evening, right? For that's one specific spot, but it's gonna be between 6 and 7. For the first waves to hit Hawaiian time.
