Let's welcome in now Emily Barrelly, PhD. She joins us. She's a foreign policy expert. Emily, great to have you here. It's great to be here. All right. So give us your take on, number one, what President Trump has accomplished with this peace plan, and number two, your reaction to the way these European countries are rallying behind it. I have two very different feelings today. Firstly, I'm very excited about this plan. We've never seen the like of it in the history of this conflict, not just from October 7th, but the many, many decades that this has been going on. So I'm actually feeling cautiously optimistic simply because it's a different approach, and that is always what we needed. But perhaps of interest to your audience, I'm somebody who's worked on Gaza and West Bank as an economist for the World Bank with UNRWA. And so I have a very boots-on-the-ground feeling about the size of the challenge. You know, half of the population are under 18. They have spent the last few years, since Hamas got into power in 2006, being indoctrinated with the kind of hate and jihadi nihilism, the likes of which we haven't really seen. So there has to be an understanding that this, you know, while the politicians can negotiate peace per se, the population themselves have got to want peace. And what do you think, I mean, obviously Hamas can't continue to play a role in the governing of Gaza. So what comes next? There doesn't seem to be any group, including the Palestinian Authority or Mahmoud Abbas, that actually has a mandate from the Palestinian people that can govern that area peacefully. You're correct. And this is part of my fear. There is no group, anybody who had any idea of how to govern the Gaza Strip in a democratic fashion was basically pushed off a building in 2006 or they left. I've always said that we have lost a generation of potential Nelson Mandela's in the Gaza Strip because the international community, my lefty tree huggers included at the World Bank, turned a blind eye since 2006 to all of the whistleblowers and all of the real freedom fighters who had a different idea. So the reality is, is that you're going to have to have some kind of international peacekeeping force, perhaps for a generation. Now, we saw that meeting earlier at the White House this week with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and President Trump, and apparently President Trump had Benjamin Netanyahu call the Qatari government and apologize for the recent strikes inside Qatar. What's your reaction to that? I was extremely surprised that he asked for this phone call. I certainly would not have apologized to Qatar. I would have taken the opportunity to ask them to freeze the bank accounts of the Hamas leaders who were sitting there fat and happy with their billions. Perhaps it was necessary political theater. I'm hoping it was that, but I certainly wouldn't have done it. Yeah, a lot of people were surprised by that. And then there's also the criticisms of President Trump that says, you know, he is beholden to Benjamin Netanyahu, but that particular story would prove otherwise. I also wanted to get your take on former UK Prime Minister Tony Blair and the role that he's going to play. He's on board for this Board of Peace. What do you think Tony Blair brings to the table in this situation? Well, you know, John, I'm a joint citizen. I just became American. But up until that point, I was a Brit. And the first person I voted for in 48 yesterday was Tony Blair. I voted for him because I'm a working class, lefty liberal, or was in those days. And we had very high expectations of Blair. And I think it's accurate to say that most Brits rather loathe him because of his involvement in the Iraq war, which was very much resisted across all political parties in my country. So there's a bit of an eye rolling today in London that he's involved. He seems to never go away. If he can do some good in Gaza, good for him. Perhaps he's looking for some kind of renovation of his image, you know, much like people in the past from World War II felt guilty about bombing Breston and wanted to renew their image and do something good in the world. Let's see what he can do. Yeah, you know, it's interesting to hear President Trump speak so highly of him. And of course, many of us do remember Tony Blair's close relationship with George W. Bush. He talked about the Iraq war. And, you know, it was kind of an odd fellow situation where you had Tony Blair from the Labor Party and George Bush, very conservative. At least that's what people thought at the time. But they did seem to get along. Emily, great to have you here with us. We're getting a two minute warning coming from the White House in just a bit.
