President Donald Trump posted on social media about achieving a "full and immediate ceasefire" between the two countries, with Pakistan responding by praising Trump as a peacemaker. However, India did not share this sentiment and soon accused Pakistan of violating the truce, stating that it had retaliated against border intrusions.

Blasts were reported in the cities of Srinagar and Jammu in Indian-administered Kashmir, with flashes and projectiles observed in the night sky. India's foreign secretary confirmed that the Indian army was taking action in response to what it described as a border intrusion. This follows recent exchanges, including missile strikes and drone launches by both sides.

India claimed that its recent strikes targeted Pakistani air bases and alleged that Pakistan previously fired on health and school facilities. The recent escalation follows the massacre of 26 tourists, mostly Indian Hindus, in Indian-administered Kashmir, which Delhi attributes to Islamabad—a charge Pakistan denies. The two nations have a long history of conflict over Kashmir, having fought three wars since the 1940s, with tens of thousands estimated to have died over the decades.

Recent events mark the deadliest period of violence between India and Pakistan in the region in the past thirty years, with dozens reported killed in the last week.



Trump praised as peacemaker amid India-Pakistan conflict

Tonight, a US-led ceasefire between India and Pakistan is already shattered, with India accusing Pakistan of repeatedly violating the truce, adding it has retaliated. President Donald Trump announced the ceasefire on social media. Pakistan praised the president as a peacemaker. India, however, did not. CBS's Remy Innocencio leads us off tonight from our London bureau. Yes, this appears to be a breakthrough, Jerika, but actions speak louder than words, and that full and immediate ceasefire that President Trump posted about does not appear to be holding. This is coming from India's foreign secretary and reports out from Indian-administered Kashmir. Blasts have been heard in the cities of Srinagar and Jammu with projectiles and flashes of light seen in the night sky like this. India's foreign secretary says the Indian army was retaliating and dealing with what it called a border intrusion, similar to last night when India and Pakistan fired missiles from fighter jets and launched drones at each other. India said that it targeted Pakistani air bases, and Indian colonels said Pakistan had earlier fired at health and school facilities. The two have been locked in this latest violence for the past two and a half weeks. On April 22nd, gunmen massacred 26 tourists in Indian-administered Kashmir. Most of those killed were Indian Hindus. Delhi accuses Islamabad of being involved in that attack, and that is a charge the country vehemently denies. The two have fought three wars since the 1940s over control of Kashmir in the high Himalayas. It is estimated tens of thousands of people have been killed since then.
