President Donald Trump has approved $29.8 million in federal disaster aid for flood recovery efforts in Wisconsin, following severe flooding that impacted southeastern communities. The funding, announced via Trump's Truth Social account, is less than the preliminary damage assessment of over $33 million for individual properties across three counties.

Governor Tony Evers had formally requested a disaster declaration, which was granted for Milwaukee, Washington, and Waukesha counties. However, the request also included Door, Grant, and Ozaukee counties, which were not covered in the current declaration. Flood victims expressed disappointment at the lower funding but remain grateful for the assistance and hope it will be distributed promptly.

I'm Mary Jo Ola in West Allis. In a Thursday post to his Truth Social account, President Donald Trump announced that he was greenlighting $29.8 million for flood recovery in Wisconsin. In August, high water devastated communities across the southeast part of the state. The approved dollar amount is less than preliminary damage assessments, which is more than $33 million for individual properties across three counties. Governor Tony Evers submitted a formal request for a disaster declaration two weeks ago. His office said they first learned of the approval through social media. Many flood victims to this day face uncertainty after the devastation forced them out of their homes. I talked with some flood victims over the phone. They shared disappointment that the approved dollar amount is less than what the early damage assessment is showing, but they're still grateful to receive any financial assistance. They just hope it comes quickly. And at this time, the presidential disaster declaration only applies to individuals and households in Milwaukee, Washington and Waukesha counties. The request from Governor Evers did include door grant in Ozaukee counties as well. And the governor says in part, quote, I will continue to urge the Trump administration to approve the remainder of my request.
