President Trump this week met with Apple CEO Tim Cook at the White House, a day after Apple's primary electronics manufacturer announced plans to invest $1.5 billion in its operations in India. I had an understanding with Tim that he wouldn't be doing this. He said he's going to India to build plants. I said, that's OK to go to India, but you're not going to sell into here without tariffs. And that's the way it is. While the Trump administration says its tariff policy is aimed at bringing more manufacturing back to the United States, analysts say that could take years and potentially more than double the cost of an iPhone. The back and forth is a bit unnerving. European markets unnerved, too, as President Trump also announced Friday he's recommending a 50 percent tariff on the E.U. starting June 1st, saying discussions are going nowhere. We're going to see what happens, but right now it's going on on June 1st, and that's the way it is. No, they haven't treated us properly. They haven't treated our country properly. President Trump told reporters numerous other trade deals are ready to be signed and claimed to have made one with China. But it's a 90-day pause on the triple-digit tariffs that both countries agreed to earlier this month. Small business owners like Ralph Bradley, who imports lighting equipment from a manufacturing partner in China, say they're still in limbo. The uncertainty is the worst part of all of this. It's hard to plan long-term strategy when you don't know what the long-term cost is going to be on your business. Now, President Trump has also appeared to back a deal between U.S. Steel and Japanese corporation Nippon Steel, saying on social media it will be a planned partnership. He didn't provide more details, but said U.S. Steel will remain in the U.S. and be headquartered in Pittsburgh.
