The Court of Appeal delivered a mixed outcome: Mockbell was acquitted of a drug trafficking conviction linked to Operation Quills, will face a retrial for a drug importation charge from Operation Orbital, and had his most serious conviction, involving trafficking over 41 kilograms of methamphetamine, upheld.

The court found that police did not rely on information from Nicola Gobbo, Mockbell's former lawyer and police informant, in the most serious case. Gobbo's exposure as 'Lawyer X' had previously led to appeals and Mockbell's release on bail after 18 years in custody. Despite the acquittal, Mockbell remains a convicted drug trafficker and is unlikely to receive compensation.

The court found that this involved a fundamental debasement of her professional obligations and impugned the integrity of his guilty pleas. Initially referred to only as Lawyer X, Nicola Gobbo's identity was publicly exposed in 2018. Since then, she's remained in hiding and on the run, changing addresses regularly in Australia and overseas, and has changed her name. The exposure of Nicola Gobbo's collusion set the stage for an appeal, leading to the 60-year-old being sensationally granted bail earlier this year, set free from the confines of prison after 18 years in custody. Mockbell's life of lawlessness dates back to the early 80s, but it wasn't until the next decade he began to build a major drug empire, quickly rising to the top, known in the underworld as the Lord Mayor.
