Recent Eurostat statistics indicate that almost one in ten students enrolled in tertiary education across the European Union is from abroad, totaling approximately 1.8 million individuals. Luxembourg has the highest proportion of foreign students, followed by Malta and Cyprus, while Greece, Croatia, and Spain report the lowest rates.

The data also shows that the origins of foreign students vary by country. Most foreign students in the EU come from other European countries, but in Ireland, Finland, Germany, and Italy, the largest group comes from Asia. France and Portugal have the highest proportions of African students, while Spain attracts the most students from the Caribbean, Central, and South America.

What are the most popular EU countries among foreign students? Almost one in ten students in EU countries comes from abroad. The latest Eurostat data shows that there are approximately 1.8 million such students enrolled in tertiary courses across the bloc, including undergraduate and postgraduate degrees. Within the EU, Luxembourg has the highest share of foreign students in this category, followed by Malta and Cyprus. At the other end of the spectrum, Greece, Croatia and Spain reported the lowest rates. Most foreign students usually come from elsewhere in Europe, but there are some notable exceptions. For example, students from Asia make up the largest group in Ireland, Finland, Germany and Italy. African students are the most prominent in France and in Portugal, accounting for 52% and 42% of all foreign tertiary students, respectively. In Spain, the largest rate of foreign students is from the Caribbean, Central and South America. In the remaining 20 EU countries, the largest group of foreign students is European. The highest proportions of European foreign students are in Slovakia, Slovenia and Croatia.
