Eric Rudolph was responsible for the bombing at the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta, which killed one person and injured over 100. In the following two years, he carried out additional bombings at abortion clinics and a nightclub, resulting in more casualties.

After being identified as a suspect in 1998, Rudolph evaded authorities for five years by hiding in the mountains of North Carolina. His arrest came when a police officer in Murphy, North Carolina, apprehended him outside a grocery store. Rudolph later pleaded guilty to all four bombings and is now serving life sentences in a high-security prison.

The manhunt for Eric Rudolph. Get on the sidewalk! Get on the sidewalk now! That suggests that perhaps a device had been planted in the trash can. The trash can exploded in front of my eyes. People were screaming. On July 27, 1996, a bomb exploded in the heart of the Summer Olympics in Atlanta. The blast killed one woman and injured more than 100 others. I saw the smoke. There's like a little tower over there. And I saw the, like the, ricochet, like particles flying off the tower thing over there. The world watched in horror as the games were rocked by terror. But this was just the beginning. Over the next two years, three more bombs would explode. At an abortion clinic and a gay nightclub in Atlanta. And at another abortion clinic in Birmingham, Alabama. Another life lost. Dozens more injured. Investigators pieced together bomb fragments, tracked chemical signatures, and followed every lead. In January 1998, after the deadly blast in Birmingham, witnesses saw a man in a truck fleeing the scene. The license plate led authorities to a name. Eric Robert Rudolph, a former Army recruit and a skilled outdoorsman with a history of extremist views. The hunt was on. The stakes are quite simple. Whoever committed the acts might kill again and must be brought to justice. And we will not rest until that happens. Rudolph vanished into the mountains of western North Carolina, launching one of the largest manhunts in U.S. history. For five years, he survived off the land, evading hundreds of federal agents and millions of dollars in search efforts. Finally, the break came not from high-tech surveillance or a SWAT team, but from a rookie police officer in Murphy, North Carolina. In the early hours of May 31, 2003, Officer Jeff Postle spotted a suspicious man outside a grocery store. He didn't know it at the time, but he had their man. I was on a patrol in the east part of town doing business checks at one of the shopping centers. Came around the corner, turned my headlights off. That's how you usually proceed around the building. There was a male subject squatted down in the middle of the road. As I approached, he observed me, and he took off running. Postle arrested the man, and at the station, the truth came out. I'm Eric Robert Rudolph. You got me, he admitted. With his arrest, the five-year reign of fear was over. Rudolph later pleaded guilty to all four bombings, revealing the locations of hidden explosives as part of his plea deal. He is now serving four life sentences at the Supermax prison in Colorado, never to be released.
