Ukrainian officials, however, have not confirmed the loss of Pokrovsk or Vovchansk and state that combat is still ongoing in these areas. The announcement coincided with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky's diplomatic efforts in Paris to secure further European support.

After months of intense battle, the Russian flag is unfurled in Pokrovsk. Moscow claims that it has finally captured this key logistics city in Ukraine. Located in the Donetsk region, Pokrovsk is strategically important because of its road and rail connections. It forms part of the Fortress Belt, a string of towns that is the main fortified defensive line in Donetsk. If Russia has taken it, like it claims, it would give Moscow another foothold in what is known as the Donbass, of which it already controls a large part. But Putin wants it all. The Russian president was informed of the developments while visiting a military command post on Sunday and briefed by top commanders. Dear comrades, the Russian armed forces are confidently maintaining the initiative and continuing to carry out the tasks of the special military operation. Russian troops are advancing on virtually all fronts. It can also be stated that the destruction of enemy formations surrounded on the left bank of the Oskol River is proceeding according to plan. The Kremlin also said forces had captured the town of Vovchansk. The announcement was made as Ukrainian President Zelensky held talks in Paris to shore up European support for his country. Ukrainian officials have not confirmed these towns are under Russian control. The country's president Zelensky, however, said on Monday that fighting was still ongoing in Pokrovsk.
