I wasn't just seeing these horrific wounds, the shrapnel, the burns, the amputations. I was hearing them, that blood-curling scream from a little girl because they don't have the painkillers. The grim statistics do not include children who've lost one or both parents. It's not about just having your mother killed. It's about watching your mother die. Many of them stay in this makeshift orphan camp. I feel such pain in my heart after losing my dad, said 12-year-old Ghazal Bassam. I want to live like we did before the war, but I know my life will never be the same again. Many hands doing the work of adults, when they should be in school. I wish I could see my mum and dad, Sajid Galban told us, and live like an ordinary child. Ten-year-old Arat Akal dreamt of being a doctor, but now she cares for her younger sisters. Whenever I heard missiles, my father would hold me, she said. Now he's gone, and I'm always scared. For two years, Gaza's children have known loss, displacement and hunger. What is this going to do to the psyche of children? We're in uncharted territory. Certainly for UNICEF, we've never known a place where every single child requires psychological support. They will never get their stolen childhoods back. But as the war enters its third year, still, they bravely try to defy the odds, marking the day with a dance for hope and light.
