Greece's Thracian Sea, home to the country's largest octopus habitat, is facing a significant threat from illegal plastic octopus traps. Despite seasonal bans designed to protect breeding periods, campaigners and authorities estimate that up to half a million traps remain on the seafloor in northern Greece. Volunteers from Sea Shepherd, supported by regional authorities, have been working to remove thousands of these traps since early July. The illegal fishing method, which is banned or restricted during the octopus breeding season, not only endangers the species' reproduction but also contributes to marine pollution. The issue extends beyond Greece, affecting other Mediterranean countries and even the Atlantic coast of Portugal. Recent efforts have led to the recovery of hundreds of miles of fishing line and the rescue of over 1,500 octopuses.

The crew on the hunt for Greece's illegal octopus traps

Home to the nation's largest octopus habitat, Greece's Thracian Sea is also blanketed by illegal plastic octopus traps. The practice threatens octopus populations, fuels marine pollution and persists despite seasonal bans meant to protect breeding. Campaigners and authorities estimate that as many as half a million traps still lie on the seafloor in northern Greece. The numbers are absolutely mind-blowing. We never anticipated to be able to recover this many traps. Since early July, volunteers from Sea Shepherd, backed by regional authorities, have been hauling up thousands of traps. Here is Sea Shepherd CEO Captain Alex Cornelissen. Anywhere is illegal right now. But specifically here, there shouldn't be any traps any time in the year. Hunters lure their prey by placing pots weighted with stones on the seabed. These barrel-shaped traps resemble the dens and rock holes where octopuses like to shelter and tend their eggs. They are tied to long lines of rope attached to small buoys. The fishing method is banned or restricted during summer breeding season in northern Greece. They're supposed to be taken out at the end of June and then they can deploy them again at the beginning of October. It's very important that this period is respected because this is a reproduction season for the octopus. So if they continue to fish and continue to keep the traps here during the reproductive season, it actually affects the octopus population and their reproduction. These traps aim to satisfy the increasing appetite for octopus. Greece, where grilled octopus in Ouzo are staples of the shore-side fish restaurants, appears to be one of the worst hit areas, Cornelissen said. The illegal traps are actually a problem throughout the Mediterranean Sea. We also have done a campaign in Italy where we have the same problem. Now in Greece, we know that Spain also has the problem and also in the Atlantic Ocean with Portugal. So it is really a problem with the octopus fishery everywhere in Europe. These traps are also the most abundant litter item removed from the Thracian Sea, according to a recent study by environmental organisation iSEA. Aboard the Sea Eagle, the crew has recovered 179 miles of line and saved more than 1,500 octopuses in their bid to combat illegal overfishing.
