Dangerous weather conditions are still hampering travel plans for many coming off the Thanksgiving weekend. CBS News' Ash-har Quraishi reports from Chicago and meteorologist Kate Bilo has a look at the forecast.

Travelers returning home after Thanksgiving are facing significant disruptions due to dangerous winter weather conditions and an urgent FAA software update affecting Airbus airliners. Nearly 4,000 flights have been delayed and over 340 canceled, with major airports such as Chicago, New York, and Boston experiencing the worst impacts. Road travel has also been affected, with icy conditions causing numerous accidents and traffic backups across several states.

Chicago's O'Hare Airport recorded a record 8.4 inches of snow, leading to long lines and residual delays. The FAA's software update compounded travel woes by grounding some jets during the busy holiday period. Another winter storm is forecast to bring more snow and rain from the Midwest to the Northeast, with major delays expected for both road and air travelers in the affected regions.

Thanksgiving travelers still trying to get home as winter storm heads east

As we return from the Thanksgiving break, travelers across the country are still struggling to get home. Thanks to dangerous weather conditions. So far, nearly 4000 U.S. flights have been delayed today. Another 344 had been canceled. The airport's most impacted him in Chicago, New York, Boston, Des Moines, Fort Lauderdale and Detroit. So it was expected to make the roads pretty treacherous for drivers in the Mississippi Valley through today and into tomorrow. Icy roads could also cause traffic backups in Arkansas and across the Ohio Valley. CBS News correspondent Usher Kirishi is in Chicago, where a record 8.4 inches of snow fell at O'Hare Airport Saturday. Usher, what are you seeing and hearing from travelers? Well, Lindsay, the lines are very long right now. Travelers here have been dealing with the residual effects from the weekend storm all day. As you mentioned, Chicago got a record 8.4 inches of snow. That record broke the last one in November of 1951. And even though the runways are clear right now, airlines are still digging out from delays and cancellations. As you mentioned, people I spoke with showed up early, expecting lines and last minute gate changes, and that has clearly been the case here. FlightAware's misery map still shows red across major hubs, putting Chicago's O'Hare Airport at the top of that list right now. And on the roads, state police reported hundreds of crashes and spinouts. Bottom line, travelers are moving again, but it's slow and they know another round of weather is coming. Forecasters say we could get another two to four inches in just the next few hours right here in the Chicago area. And over the weekend, the FAA ordered an urgent software update for thousands of Airbus airliners around the world. How did that affect holiday travel? Well, the FAA's order hit right in the middle of an already stressed travel weekend. Airlines had to ground some Airbus's jets to run that mandatory software update, which meant crews were shuffled, flights were delayed, and in some cases canceled. It didn't cause a system wide meltdown, but it added another layer of disruption on top of the storm that we were seeing. The backlog spilled into today and you can see it in the delay boards here in Chicago and on FlightAware. More red than green as operations are struggling to catch up. Okay, Asher Qureshi, thank you. A winter storm is on tap again, this time taking aim from the Plains to the Northeast over the next couple of days with up to a foot of snow possible in some areas. CBS News Philadelphia meteorologist Kate Bilos tracking this for us. We are tracking a potent winter storm that's gonna cause travel trouble for a lot of folks across the Midwest today and tonight and eventually the Northeast tomorrow. This system moving into portions of Illinois, Indiana, and Ohio with accumulating snow tonight and then moving into the Northeast. It's pulling in moisture from the Gulf of Mexico and actually wanna turn on our future radar showing you what this is gonna do tomorrow morning. Look at all of this blue. That is snow across Pennsylvania, New York, and up into New England. Heavy rain further South. Now it looks like most of the major cities in the Northeast. New York City, Philadelphia, Washington DC. This will likely mainly be just basically some steadier rainfall with this system. But let's go ahead and take a look at the Northeast. I'm gonna put our Northeast map up and I wanna show you the timing of this as we go through the course of the day because a lot of people traveling and what you need to know, this is going to be moving in and you can see how it starts as some snow in cities like Philadelphia and up toward New York City. Eventually it transitions to plain rain and we're talking heavy downpours with this. That will likely clear out by about three or four o'clock in the afternoon. But the morning commute or any flight plans, any airports across the Eastern Seaboard, Boston, New York City, Philadelphia, Baltimore DC, expect major delays. Just another snarl for any post Thanksgiving travelers trying to make their way back home tomorrow. I'll send it back to you. Kate, thank you.
