Around 200 Texas National Guard troops have arrived in Illinois and are preparing for deployment in Chicago at the request of President Trump, as part of a federal effort to address what the administration calls violent demonstrations. The troops, who have received civil disturbance training, are tasked with protecting federal law enforcement and property, particularly around ICE facilities in Chicago and Broadview.

Illinois officials have opposed the deployment, calling it baseless and unlawful, and have taken legal action to challenge it. A federal judge will soon hear arguments regarding the legality of the move. If the deployment is not blocked, an additional 300 federal guardsmen from Illinois may be sent. President Trump has indicated a willingness to invoke the Insurrection Act if necessary. Similar federal actions are being contested in Oregon, where a judge has temporarily blocked National Guard deployment.

It is just the latest city targeted by what Trump has called a crackdown on crime. CBS News Homeland Security correspondent Nicole Skanga has the very latest. Roughly 200 members of the Texas National Guard are arriving in the Chicago area. Now they'll attend operational debriefs ahead of deployment this week. They're fresh off of C-17 military planes and have already received civil disturbance training. Their assignment, well, the Pentagon has ordered these soldiers to protect federal law enforcement and property from what the Trump administration calls violent demonstrations. Of course, Illinois and Chicago have pushed back, sued their argument. They call the move baseless and unlawful, falling short of the legal requirements for the president invoking these emergency powers, even violating the Constitution. A federal judge is gonna hear from both sides on Thursday, but before then, sources tell CBS News, we'll see Texas National Guard pushed onto mission outside of ICE facilities in downtown Chicago and Broadview. And if the judge doesn't block this deployment, we can expect to see 300 more federal guardsmen, this time from Illinois, in the coming days. Now, if she does, well, President Trump says he's willing to invoke the Insurrection Act to send troops to Chicago and to Portland. A federal judge in Oregon, meanwhile, temporarily blocked National Guard from deploying there. A hearing in that case also set for Thursday. And in Portland today, DHS Secretary Kristi Noem met with the state's governor, Tina Kotek, and Portland Police Chief Bob Day. Reporting for CBS News, I'm Nicole Skanga in Washington.
