Secretary of State Marco Rubio has been in communication with senior officials in both India and Pakistan amid escalating tensions between the two nations. The increase in tensions follows a terrorist attack in Indian-controlled Kashmir, where three gunmen killed at least 26 civilians at a tourist location. India has accused Pakistan of involvement in the attack, a claim that Pakistan denies.

In response to the incident, the Indian government, led by Prime Minister Modi, has reportedly given its military leadership full discretion to respond to the attack. Pakistan has, in turn, claimed that it has received credible intelligence about an imminent military action by India. While India has not confirmed any plans for military action, stern warnings have been issued by the Indian leadership.

International attention has grown, with the U.S. Secretary of State engaging with Indian and Pakistani officials. There is pressure on both nations, particularly on India, to manage the situation carefully. The situation is tense, with the global community closely monitoring developments between these nuclear-armed neighbors.



Terrorist attack escalates Pakistan, India tensions

Secretary of State Marco Rubio spoke with senior officials in India and in Pakistan as rising tensions between the two nuclear-armed nations continue. Pakistan claims it has credible intelligence that India plans to take imminent military action against its country. This comes after a terrorist attack in Indian-controlled Kashmir killed at least 26 people last week. India accuses Pakistan of involvement in that attack, and that is an accusation Islamabad denies. For more on this, we're joined now by CBS News producer Arshad Zargar from New Delhi. Arshad, good morning to you. Help us understand how this terrorist attack last week escalated tensions between these two neighbors. So this attack happened in Indian-Kashmir Pahalgam area, which is a very beautiful tourist hotspot. What happened was at least three gunmen entered a picnic spot and gunned down 26 civilians, most of them men. So soon after the attack, Indian investigative agencies and the leadership started blaming Pakistan. Pakistan denied its role in it, but the pressure was growing on Prime Minister Modi to act against these terrorists. And he issued warnings against terrorists and a couple of days later, he held meetings with his top ministers and the military leadership and reportedly gave them full freedom to decide on a response to the attack. So everybody started assuming that India will be actually taking some kind of a military action. And in fact, the Pakistani minister did a midnight press conference to say that India is, they have intelligence that India is planning an attack on Pakistan within days. So that is how all this thing happened. And Arshad, has there been now any response from Indian officials to this claim Pakistan is making that this attack is imminent? Not really. India has neither accepted nor denied actually that it's planning any attack. But the fact of the matter is that India has, Prime Minister himself has given very stern warnings that they are going to act in some way. What exactly will be the step that India is going to take? It's a matter of guesses for everyone. Experts believe that India, Modi will have to take some kind of an action as happened before. But at the same time, pressure is growing on Prime Minister Modi to deescalate. The international pressure, as you said, the US Secretary of State has already spoken to Modi's top minister and the minister of Pakistan. Yeah, two nuclear armed nations.
