CBS News has learned the tech company Oracle could play a key role if a TikTok deal is finalized between the Trump administration and China. Sources say the structure of the final deal is unclear, but it will include multiple companies.

Sources familiar with ongoing negotiations report that Oracle is among a group of companies that could help facilitate TikTok's continued operation in the United States. The final structure of the deal has not been confirmed, and it is unclear what role Chinese companies, including TikTok's parent ByteDance, will play or who will control TikTok's recommendation algorithm.

The developments follow a framework agreement between the US administration and China to comply with a law requiring TikTok to be owned by a US entity or face a ban. While experts do not expect the app to be removed imminently, a failed deal could affect millions of small businesses and the platform's 170 million US users.

Senior business and tech correspondent Jolene Kent has more. Jolene, good morning. Good morning, Nate. Sources with knowledge of the negotiations tell CBS News the tech giant Oracle is part of a group of companies that would allow TikTok in the US to continue operating. According to sources, the structure of the final deal is unclear, but it will include multiple firms. There's no word on what level, though, of involvement there will be from Chinese companies, including TikTok's parent company, ByteDance, and what their role will be in the deal or who will ultimately control TikTok's algorithm, that recommendation algorithm. That's the key technology that serves up the videos that you see keeping users scrolling TikTok. Now, all this comes after Treasury Secretary Scott Besson said Monday the administration and China have struck a framework deal to meet the requirements of a law that now requires TikTok to be owned by a US entity or face a ban. Oracle's founder and chairman, Larry Ellison, is an ally of President Trump. And you may remember back in 2020, Oracle briefly reached a deal to buy TikTok, but then that fell apart. We should point out that his son, David Ellison, is now the owner of CBS through a merger combining his media company, Skydance, with CBS News' parent company, Paramount. And of course, CBS News, we've reached out to Oracle executives and a White House spokesperson for comment, and a TikTok spokesperson declined. Our multiple requests for comment, Nate. All right, so Trump's deadline to sell TikTok expires Wednesday, two days before Trump and Xi are set to discuss the final details. What are we expecting? Yeah, this is a great question for everyone on TikTok. It's unclear what will happen, but experts do not expect the app to come down like it did back in mid-January. Secretary Besant says a deal would address US national security requirements, but keep Chinese characteristics of TikTok. So if a deal does fall through, a TikTok ban could impact roughly 7 million small businesses who heavily rely on the platform. 170 million TikTok users here in the US, Nate. Jolene, thank you.
