Tanzania's electoral commission has disqualified opposition presidential candidate Luhaga Mpina for a second time, shortly after a court had ordered his reinstatement. The ACT Wazalendo party, which Mpina represents, has criticized the decision as unfounded and politically motivated. 

With Mpina's exclusion, President Samia Suluhu Hassan faces only minor party candidates in the forthcoming general election. The main opposition party, Chadema, was previously disqualified for not signing the Electoral Code of Conduct, and its leader, Tundu Lissou, remains in jail on treason charges, which he denies. Human rights groups have raised concerns about increasing repression of government critics ahead of the election.

Mpina's exclusion leaves President Samia Suluhu Hassan a clear run at next month's general election, with only candidates from minor parties allowed to compete. The leading opposition party Chadema was disqualified in April after failing to sign the Electoral Code of Conduct as part of its call for electoral reforms. Chadema's leader Tundu Lissou has been in jail for over five months after being charged with treason. He has denied all accusations. State groups say Lissou's detention and the increasing repression of government critics in recent months point to a government crackdown ahead of the election. Hassan came to power without being directly elected after the death of John Magufuli in March 2021. She does not have unanimous support even within her own party.
