The Tampa Police Department is cracking down on underage drinking and fake IDs. Friday night, 19 people were arrested in Ybor and SoHo for doing just that.

This action is part of an ongoing effort by local authorities to address underage drinking, particularly as students return for the fall semester at local universities.

The operation, supported by Hillsborough deputies and Florida Highway Patrol troopers, follows a similar initiative in May that resulted in over 50 arrests. Police stated that not all offenders faced felony charges; first-time offenders were eligible for a misdemeanor and diversion program. Local business owners expressed support for the crackdown, noting the prevalence of fake IDs among younger patrons.

eight news starts now. Good evening and welcome to Tampa Bay 28 news at 11. I'm Nadine Yanis tonight. We are following through on a message from Tampa police cracking down on those with fake I. D. S. And underage drinkers. 18 plus 21 and over tonight. So back in May in what Tampa police called Operation Buzzkill, officers arrested more than 50 people for either having a fake I. D. Or drinking underage. Well, last night, 19 people were arrested for the same thing. It comes on the weekend, right before the first day of fall semester for students at USF and the University of Tampa. On Monday, Tampa Bay 28 reporter Annette Gutierrez went to Ybor and Soho to talk to businesses and locals about what this means for them. Tampa police tells us they have an ongoing effort to crack down on underage drinking. We came out to Ybor to talk to some local business owners and they tell us they are all for it. If you're bar hopping through Ybor and Soho and you have a fake I. D. Tampa police is out to get you 21 and up right now. Is this the real one or the fake one? The so called Operation Buzzkill happened back in May and again on Friday night when 19 underage drinkers found themselves in the back of a patrol car. Tampa officers with the help of Hillsborough deputies and F. H. P. Troopers went on the hunt to find fake I. D. S. And underage drinkers in Soho and Ybor. I supported 100% copper shaker is one of the many bars in Ybor that draws a younger crowd over the course of several years. Jesus Echeverria, the bar's manager, says they have collected over 200 fake I. D. S. If it's in our possession, we keep it. If you look younger than 40, we're going to check for your I. D. And you know, we've been trained to identify fake I. D. S. As well. In a facebook post, the agency said, quote, facing felony charges for possessing a fake I. D. Is a steep price to pay for that hard seltzer. Tampa police says not everyone got a felony charge, though. If they were a first time offender, they would have only gotten a misdemeanor and placed into an arrest diversion program. The agency says it wants to keep streets safer and encourage kids to make better choices. Deputize is a liquor license. Um, and you know, and kids don't know how to behave in Soho. Some bucks pre gamers said it's not surprising to hear about this. I've definitely seen some younger people in Soho, not as much in Ybor. Nick Wilcox graduated from USF and is familiar with the Soho scene. I think it's probably for the best. I definitely know this is like where the college kids want to come. I spoke with the Tampa police spokesperson over the phone asking them whether this is specifically targeted for college students.
