Sydney is preparing to host its inaugural marathon as part of the World Marathon Majors, joining the ranks of Tokyo, Boston, London, Berlin, Chicago, and New York. Elite athletes such as Eliud Kipchoge and Sifan Hassan have arrived, with 35,000 runners from over 100 countries expected to participate.

The event is anticipated to draw 300,000 spectators, resulting in major road closures throughout the city, including the Sydney Harbour Bridge and other key routes. Organisers recommend public transport for those attending, as preparations continue for what is expected to be a landmark event with a finish line at the Sydney Opera House.

From North Sydney to Kingsford, major roads will be closed for most of the day. The Sydney Harbour Bridge, Carhill Expressway and Western Distributor are included. Ideally use public transport, that's going to be the best way to get into the city. Preparations are underway as they get ready for 35,000 runners to cross the finish line here, alongside the Sydney Opera House, which is arguably the most picturesque finish line in the world. Doors open today for participants' bib collection. We are happy, we are coming from the Netherlands. And for me it's the seventh marathon and my husband the sixth one. My fourth Sydney. The finish line is the best. Which is something everyone who starts the race hopes to see.
