A 60-year-old man has been arrested after allegedly firing up to 50 rounds from his Croydon Park apartment, injuring three people, one requiring emergency surgery. Police are investigating the motive, and the suspect is undergoing a mental health assessment.

A 60-year-old man, identified as Artemios Mintsas, was arrested after allegedly firing a rifle from his apartment onto Georges River Road in Sydney's Croydon Park. The incident resulted in three people being treated in hospital, including one who required emergency surgery, while around a dozen others suffered minor injuries from glass and shrapnel. 

Police responded rapidly, coming under fire themselves before specialised teams arrested the suspect. Mintsas, a Sydney Trains employee with no significant criminal history, is expected to face multiple firearm charges. Authorities are continuing their investigation, including a mental health assessment, as they seek to determine the motive for the shooting.

With their weapons loaded and ready, highly trained police go up against an active gunman in Sydney's inner west. As the shots kept coming, police moved in and surrounded a small apartment. This was the highest level of police response and it was warranted. The first panicked reports came in around 7.30pm of an active shooter at Croydon Park. The alleged gunman was seen firing a rifle from the window of an upper level apartment down onto busy Georges River Road. Some guys windshield blew up and then the bus stop glass had shattered, bullets were just hitting stuff so we ran back into the office. Up to 50 rounds unleashed at random. One man, a passenger in a passing car, was hit in the neck and chest. Others driving by dodged bullets by centimetres. Police arrived within minutes as those officers also came under fire. It wasn't long until specialised response teams arrived as backup and then, a little over two hours later, a 60-year-old man arrested inside the apartment and transferred to Bankstown Hospital with minor injuries. The accused gunman doesn't have an extensive criminal history but his alleged indiscriminate shooting spree left three people needing treatment in hospital, one required emergency surgery but is expected to recover. Around a dozen others were treated for minor injuries, hit by glass and shrapnel. It's incredible that nobody has died. Others were treated for shock, rattled by the violence that had rained down around them, an experience so foreign to most Australians. It's a bit like America. Today, police continue trawling through the man's apartment, searching for evidence that could explain why he allegedly opened fire. The vast array of damage caused became clearer in the daylight as some claim this may not have been the first time shots were fired. My understanding is that he, the same person, shot at this side of the road about a week ago and we have eyewitness reports to that. That incident wasn't reported to police, who risked their own lives in the face of serious danger. I've examined a number of the cars that were involved. One shot was fired through the window of one of the police cars. Their bravery while under fire brought a terrifying night of violence to an end safely as detectives now begin the process of laying charges. Taylor Ryan, 10 News. Let's go to Olivia Blunden now who is at Burwood Police Station where the alleged gunman is being held. Olivia, he is set to be charged soon. That's right, Lachie. The 60-year-old man is expected to be slapped with a string of serious firearm offences but they are still pending. We can, however, confirm the identity of this man. He goes by the name of Artie. His full name is Artemios Mintsas. He's a father of two and customer service attendant for Sydney Trains, meaning he directs commuters on the platform. Police say he was at work on Saturday, less than 24 hours before this all unfolded. 10 News understands his employment status is under review pending the outcome of this investigation. He was still being questioned by police just half an hour ago and is actively assisting them again. He is expected to be charged any moment and when that happens, he'll face court at a later date. Now, he isn't known to police and it's understood he will participate in a mental health assessment but the question that's still unanswered, Lachie, is why, what exactly triggered this man to allegedly open fire and that's what police are tonight working so hard to find out.
