The alleged mastermind behind the 2021 Abbey Gate suicide bombing at Kabul's airport in Afghanistan has appeared in a U.S. court after being extradited. Mohamed Sharifullah, identified as a regional ISIS-K commander, is facing charges of conspiracy to provide material support to a foreign terrorist organization. This charge carries the potential for a life sentence if convicted. 

Sharifullah was ordered by a federal judge in Virginia to remain in custody until his formal detention hearing. The case is being closely monitored by the Department of Justice, and extensive efforts have been made to ensure media coverage of the developments. According to charging documents, prosecutors allege that Sharifullah admitted to being involved in plotting the attack.

The attack resulted in the deaths of 13 U.S. service members and numerous others. Sharifullah was reportedly implicated in planning the bomber's route shortly after his release from jail on a different matter. The Department of Justice is preparing to argue for his continued detention at an upcoming hearing.

The alleged mastermind of the 2021 Abigail suicide bombing at Kabul's airport in Afghanistan appeared in court yesterday after being extradited to the U.S. A federal judge in Virginia ordered regional ISIS-K commander Mohamed Sharifullah to be held in custody until his formal detention hearing on Monday. CBS News Justice Department correspondent Scott McFarlane was at the hearing and joins us now from Washington. Scott, what did we learn in court yesterday and specifically what charges is this suspect facing? Hey, Errol, good morning. Sharifullah is facing a felony charge of conspiracy to provide material support to a foreign terrorist organization. That is a high-level charge the judge made clear could lead to life in prison if there's a conviction. What's more, Sharifullah is going to be held in custody, in the U.S. Marshals' custody, pending a hearing Monday and potentially pending trial. The affidavit submitted in this case makes clear, according to the prosecutors, that Sharifullah was not only part of plotting the route used by the bomber in the attack that killed 13 U.S. service members and dozens of others, but that he had done so just two weeks after being released from jail on a different case and a different charge. This is part of a growing case that the Department of Justice is trying to give prominence at a very high profile. President Trump's Department of Justice was quick to share images of this and to make sure that media outlets were aware this was happening. How are they linking Sharifullah to the bombing? What evidence are they sharing? This is gonna be part of what they present Monday when they argue for Sharifullah to be held in jail pending trial. But according to the charging documents in the case so far, Errol, they say he's admitted to being part of the plot, that he acknowledged it while being questioned by the FBI this weekend, as the arrest was being effected. So they're saying he's acknowledging all this. He hasn't given his side of the story yet, nor has he entered a plea yet, Errol. The case is still in its earliest stages. We'll see where this goes Monday. This is in Virginia because, among other reasons, he was flown back to the United States or flown to the United States into Dulles International Airport, which is in Virginia. So all of this is gonna play out in the city of Alexandria, right outside of Washington. And then what do you expect to happen on Monday? I think you can bet the mortgage that the Department of Justice is gonna try to keep him held in custody, not let him see an ounce of daylight pending his trial. In Virginia, the federal courts move real quick. They call it the rocket docket. Errol, I'd expect a trial date to be set that is just months away.
