At the time of her death, police observed signs of violence and burn marks on her body. Gatineau police say the breakthrough was made through new investigative techniques, but declined to elaborate on what that entailed. The family of the victim were in the courthouse earlier today, but did not speak to the media afterwards. And following today's court appearance, prosecutors made only a brief statement. As of September 29, a warrant of arrest of Mr. Stéphane Rivard has been issued. Today the accused, Mr. Stéphane Rivard, appeared by videoconference on one count of permitted murder of Valérie Leblanc committed on August 23, 2011 in Gatineau. As provided for in the criminal code, Mr. Rivard's detention is immediate. A restraining order was sought to contact the victim's family. Rivard's legal aid representative also spoke briefly, saying the charges against him are serious in nature. I will take the time to review the disclosure of evidence. Mr. Rivard is presumed innocent.
