Police have connected the shooting to a broader pattern of extortion attempts, particularly targeting South Asian communities in Surrey. Authorities are currently investigating 48 such cases, 29 of which involve shootings. Recent measures include the formation of a provincial task force and a reward fund to encourage information leading to convictions, but community members are calling for more decisive action.

Former NDP MP and MLA-turned-radio host Ginny Sims is angry after someone shot into Swift 1200 AM radio on Monday evening. No one was working at the time. Sims says the Surrey Police Chief Norm Lipinski was a guest on her show just hours before, talking about public safety amid extortion threats in the city. We talk about freedom of speech, freedom of association, and yet there is a direct attack. The same night as we raise an issue that is very disturbing for the community. The Surrey Police Service says the shooting is tied to a wave of extortion attempts targeting South Asian communities. It notes the station owner has also been threatened. Officers are looking into 48 such cases across the city, 29 of which involve shootings. In some cases, these incidents have been happening for several years. And it's only been really since about May this year that we've seen a significant spike in the cases here in Surrey. Last month, the B.C. government announced a new provincial task force to crack down on the threats. Last June, the RCMP set up a national team to help investigate similar extortions in Alberta, Ontario, as well as B.C. But Ginny Sims is looking for more. Don't give us a sweet pill saying we've got a task force. We need to see action. We need to see arrests. We need to see charges. Just days before the launch of the task force, Surrey Mayor Brenda Locke announced a $250,000 reward fund for information leading to conviction in local extortion cases.
