The U.S. Supreme Court will hear arguments in its latest LGBTQ+ rights case Tuesday, weighing the constitutionality of conversion therapy bans passed by nearly half of U.S. states.

Colorado, along with 23 other states and the District of Columbia, prohibits conversion therapy, which is widely discredited by medical professionals and associated with psychological harm.

A Christian counselor from Colorado Springs is challenging the state's law, arguing it restricts her free speech and therapeutic options. The case has drawn national attention due to its potential impact on similar laws in other states and the ongoing debate between LGBTQ+ rights and religious freedom.

Today, the Supreme Court will be taking up a case that started right here in Colorado and at the center of that debate is if states can ban conversion therapy for LGBTQ plus kids. So right now Colorado does have a law that bans it and experts say that this therapy is scientifically discredited and can lead to psychological distress. Want to bring in Scripps newsgroups, Joe Saint George, Joe, a Christian counselor from Colorado Springs is challenging that law on the grounds of free speech. Guys, this is something that's been years in the making. Before I moved here to DC to cover this building for a living, I was a political reporter at the state Capitol in Denver. I remember this fight to pass conversion therapy and I remember the debate over what will the Supreme Court say or not say regarding this issue. This is a fight again that has been years in the making, and today this question of conversion therapy goes before the highest court in the land. Colorado isn't alone. 23 states have passed this bill. 23 states plus the District of Columbia ban of forms of conversion therapy, which there are different definitions out there, but for the most part, restricts a therapist from engaging LGBTQ plus youth with any type of conversion or transition to straight heterosexual type of therapy. All of this is going to be front and center before the conservative leaning court. Yes, it's a 63 conservative leaning court on paper. That doesn't mean anything when it comes to a final opinion, and we won't get a final opinion. For several months in this particular case, important to note what both sides are saying. The American Medical Association, many other leading medical groups, have said that conversion therapy can cause psychological distress. Attorney General Phil Weiser, in an interview with the Scripps News Group interview with Denver 7 earlier this year, said that look, Colorado views this process as harmful, and because Colorado has the ability to regulate therapists, counselors in the state, that's why they ban it. It's a pretty simple argument. Attorney General Phil Weiser has made in recent months regarding this. Meanwhile, the other side of it, the counselor out of Colorado Springs, Kaylee Childs. She believes that she should have more freedom, another tool in her toolbox to treat patients and she feels as though she is restricted in the therapy that she can provide because of Colorado's ban. I'm struck guys by how many of these LGBTQ plus versus conservative Christian legal fights have come out of Colorado, right? I mean, on one hand we've got this case. We had the Lakewood Baker who didn't want to make same sex wedding cakes. We had the graphic design artist out of Colorado who didn't want to make wedding websites. Here we have another case. Again, the Christian legal community, conservative legal community versus the LGBTQ plus community. And again, it's all out of Colorado with implications for the entire country. Just mentioned those implications show a lot of eyes going to be on this case. Thanks so much for your insights this morning.
