The East Coast is seeing its first significant snowfall of the season thanks to a powerful storm that's ripped its way across the U.S. CBS News' Tom Hanson reports on the snowfall and meteorologist Kate Bilo has a look at the forecast.

A major winter storm has impacted large portions of the United States, beginning with record-breaking snowfall in Kansas City and hazardous icy conditions in Oklahoma. The storm has since moved into the Northeast, bringing the first significant snowfall of the season to areas such as New York and New England, causing slushy and dangerous road conditions and several reported accidents.

More than 36 million people are under winter storm alerts, with meteorologists forecasting additional snow accumulations of three to six inches in parts of New England within 24 hours. The storm is expected to move quickly out to sea, impacting New England and then heading toward the Canadian Maritimes, while another weather system is set to bring heavy mountain snow to Colorado.

Storm brings snow, ice to Northeast and Mid-Atlantic

A powerful storm is ripping across the US. In the Midwest, Kansas City already got its first record-breaking snow of the season with more than five inches Monday, and icy conditions made roads there a mess. Oklahoma was bad too, including dozens of crashes and backups on the highways in Tulsa. The storm is now bringing the Northeast its first significant snowfall of the season, as you can see there on the radar on your screen. CBS News correspondent Tom Hanson is in Middletown, New York. Tom, how is it where you are? Hey there, Lindsay. Well, it's been kind of a sloppy, slushy mess. We've gotten a consistent amount of snow, probably about half an inch to an inch every single hour since the snow really picked up here around 10 a.m. So I want to give you some context into what we're seeing on the ground. This snow is dense. It is heavy. It's perfect for a snowball, but not so great for the roads. Actually, in fact, it's kind of a nightmare for the roads because it's leaving behind a trail of slush. Now, there are crews, roughly a dozen of these large snow plows, who are trying to clear the roads, but really one of the main concerns here is as we head into the evening hours, that snow that has turned into slush because of some of the road traffic here, that's going to freeze over and that's going to create some issues for the people who are trying to get around this area. We talked to the city commissioner here in Middletown earlier. He said there have already been a couple of crashes just in this little township alone, but really, this is the brunt of this storm, which has been rolling through the country, bringing flights to a screeching halt in certain points, causing dozen or, you know, dumping inches of snow in certain parts. And here we are bracing for that snow, which is really bearing down on the northeast. So we'll keep you posted as we head into the evening hours, Lindsay. Okay. Appreciate it. CBS News Philadelphia meteorologist Kate Bilow has the forecast. Well, thank you. It's been a messy day across much of the eastern half of the country, especially the east coast. Let's take a look at what's happening right now. I want to turn on our radar loop and take you through this storm system, a massive storm that really impacted much of New England, New York State, Pennsylvania, even Ohio last night into early this morning with snow. And we've got heavy rain further south rain, really blanketing portions of the coastal Carolinas down to even the Florida panhandle. We saw some storms with this and it's moving pretty quickly out to sea impacting New England this evening and then headed to the Canadian Maritimes. We also have another system dropping into the Rockies, which is going to produce heavy mountain snow for portions of Colorado as we get into the next couple of days. So let's take a look at that eastern storm and where it is headed next. Again, as we set this into motion tonight, you can see portions of coastal Maine, Massachusetts really starting to get hit with that heavy snow that is then going to lift lift into the Canadian Maritimes. And by tomorrow morning, most of the northeast is dry, but chilly and turning even colder. Additional snowfall in accumulation. The information we have from our model showing at least another three to six inches possible in portions of New England within the next 24 hours. I'll send it back to you.
