The City of St. Paul has shut down its wireless internet and the Minnesota National Guard has been activated after a cyberattack on the city, according to Mayor Melvin Carter.

St. Paul city officials have confirmed a major cyberattack that has disabled the city's wireless network and several online services. The incident prompted the involvement of the Minnesota National Guard's cyber protection experts and the FBI, as the scale of the attack exceeded the city's response capabilities. 

Authorities have identified the attack as a deliberate and coordinated effort by an external actor, targeting the city's information infrastructure. While emergency and public safety services continue to operate, most internet-based city services, including Wi-Fi and online payments, are offline. The investigation is ongoing, with no information yet available regarding the motive or any ransom demands.

Investigators say there's been a significant cyber attack and that's what authorities are trying to determine. Right now, some might be wondering why the National Guard is responding to a digital incident. Mayor Carter requested the support because the scale and complexity of the attack. Exceeded city response capabilities. So Governor Tim Walz deployed the Minnesota National Guard's cyber forces, which are cyber protection experts. The FBI is also involved in the investigation. City officials say the cyber attack was intended to be a response to a potential cyber attack. We now know that this was not a system glitch or technical error. This was a deliberate, coordinated digital attack carried out by a sophisticated external actor. Intentionally and criminally targeting our city's information infrastructure. Here's what we know. As far as timeline early Friday morning, the city's team was alerted to suspicious activity on the city's internal systems. Authorities say the attack was not intended to be a response to a potential cyber attack, but as a result of further compromise, a full network shutdown has been initiated. So what does this mean for city services and potential disruptions? Basically all the city's Internet based services are offline, so that includes Wi Fi and online payment services were told. Emergency response and public safety are fully operational. Libraries and rec centers are open. But again, it's not clear if this was a cyber attack or just a coincidence.
