The CEO of Singtel, Optus' parent company, announcing his support of an independent investigation into the deadly triple zero outage, without any fresh explanation as to exactly what triggered it. It was due to a step that was missed by someone at Optus. People made mistakes. It was not a question of money. It was not a question of investment. Stephen Roo stood silently beside his boss, who was asked directly if he has confidence in the Optus CEO, off the back of another outage that affected customers in the Illawarra on Sunday. Does he have your full support? As I said, we brought in Stephen 11 months ago. How do you think he's going? It is very early days. While today's meeting could have been productive behind closed doors, out in the open it felt like more of the same. There were lots of apologies for falling short and promises to do better. But for Optus customers, it's difficult to see any real progress. Minister Wells has also called for Singtel to appoint an independent accountability partner. What it means is that we are going to get all of the expertise and help that we need to make sure we make things right here. Last year in the wake of a 14 hour Optus outage, the government promised to establish a triple zero custodian, led by the ombudsman, to better enforce industry regulations. That's yet to be finalised. I'm still a new minister to the industry. I would say that we are fast tracking our triple zero guardian legislation.
