The charges include racketeering conspiracy and running a continuing criminal enterprise, both tied to his role in the cartel's violent drug operations. Zambada, who was arrested in Texas the previous year, is recognized for his leadership alongside Joaquin 'El Chapo' Guzman, during which the cartel expanded into one of the world's largest drug trafficking organizations.

Federal prosecutors recently announced they would not seek the death penalty against Zambada. A press conference led by U.S. Attorney General Pamela Bondi and other officials is scheduled to provide additional information on the case and its implications.

Let's go to Brooklyn, where this morning a major player in the Sinaloa cartel is expected to plead guilty to federal charges in what could be a major blow to that cartel. CBS News correspondent joining us now, Chanel Call. Good to see you. What do we know about what happened there this morning? Hey, Reid. Good to see you, too. We know that hearing is happening at noon eastern in Brooklyn, New York today, and we're talking about the longtime leader of the Sinaloa cartel, Ismael Elmayo Zambada. He, Reid, is expected today to plead guilty to change his plea to a guilty plea to one count of racketeering conspiracy and one count of running a continuing criminal enterprise. Now, this, as you know, is connected to his role in the violent drug trade that for years has flooded our country with things like cocaine and heroin. The 77-year-old was arrested, you'll remember, in Texas last year. Reid, prosecutors are saying under the leadership of this person, Zambada and Joaquin El Chapo Guzman, the Sinaloa cartel actually grew from a regional player to the largest drug trafficking organization in the world. It's one that became violent. It became highly militarized and also carried out assassinations, kidnappings and torture. This change in plea is notable today, Reid. It comes two weeks after federal prosecutors said that they wouldn't seek the death penalty against him. And we also can report that coming up at 3 p.m. Eastern today, U.S. Attorney General Pamela Bondi, she will lead a press conference with leaders from a number of other government agencies here in Brooklyn, New York, where we may learn a bit more about this change in plea and what this means going forward.
