I'm Jane Kim at San Diego International Airport right now. It's business as usual at the airport. There are no long lines at TSA or delays for flights. However, things could change if the government shutdown doesn't end soon. I spoke with a TSA agent here at San Diego International who says their first missed paycheck will be this Monday. So they're not getting much cushion to plan out their budget and that could become a big issue coast to coast. During President Trump's first term, the country saw its longest government shutdown in history stretching 35 days. And about three weeks into the shutdown, some unpaid TSA agents and air traffic controllers started calling in sick and not showing up on the job. This caused flight delays and long lines for flyers all around the country. Now the shutdown comes as the TSA and Federal Aviation Administration both face staffing shortages. ABC News reports a number of TSA agents quit their jobs during the previous shutdown. Agents are asking travelers to be patient in these uncertain times. Just for passengers, please be patient going through because this is already a high stress job. And it's just been compounded by the fact that you may not get a paycheck. Please give us some time.
