The structure, which opened in 1978, requires significant repairs estimated between $50 and $100 million due to years of delayed maintenance, including a leaking roof and infrastructure issues.

City officials are considering whether to invest in restoring the building or to redevelop the valuable land it occupies, which is adjacent to the new Convention Center. While some design experts emphasize the building's historical and architectural importance, city leaders must balance these concerns with other financial priorities such as public safety and infrastructure. A decision is expected after the city's Finance Committee reviews the costs.

Brandon City Hall sits on multiple acres and it's valuable land that could be used for new development next to the new Convention Center. But some design experts say it's part of the city's history and should not be torn down. Dallas City Hall opened 47 years ago in 1978. It was designed by internationally renowned architect I.M. Pei who also designed the Louvre Pyramid in Paris. Council member Chad West says years of delayed maintenance have taken a big toll on the building including a leaking roof and major infrastructure issues. The cost to make repairs is estimated between 50 and 100 million dollars. Architect Norman Alston is vice president of the city's urban peer review design panel. He says the building was meant to last forever and it tells the story of the city. Dallas was desperate to throw off the shame of the Kennedy assassination. They wanted something modern and bold. That's this shape right here. They wanted a place for the community to come together. That's the rationale for this huge plaza. We have got to put all the heads in one room and figure it out fairly quickly because if our deferred maintenance bill is a hundred million dollars we've got to make a decision on if the taxpayers can sustain that. Is that something with all of our other priorities being our police and fire pension are crumbling streets and roads that need to be fixed are you know making sure we're we're paying adequately our police officers our firefighters. West chairs the city's Finance Committee which will meet to look at the exact cost of the maintenance. He says then the city will have to decide whether to move out or invest in those repairs and that vote is expected before at the end of the year. Lauren and Brandon.
