Despite these changes, officials emphasize the importance of maintaining the festive atmosphere while ensuring safety, and visitors report feeling secure while enjoying the markets.

Three things are essential to German Christmas markets. Christmas tree baubles, mulled wine and vehicle barriers to stop cars ploughing into the market, like last year's deadly attack in the city of Magdeburg. These are mobile vehicle barriers set up by the city of Munich to block access to the market areas. They're heavy, and if a vehicle were to drive into them, the weight of these solid posts would cause them to tip backwards, lifting the car off the ground. But safety barriers are not the only precaution police are taking at this Christmas market in the heart of Munich. There is also heavy surveillance. Those measures come at a price. Security costs have more than doubled from last year at this Christmas market in Munich, putting a financial strain on market organizers and local authorities. A police presence is also part of the security concept, both with uniformed and plainclothes officers. Their presence is meant to deter pickpockets and to convey the feeling of safety for visitors and market workers. We've seen some fences and we've seen a police presence. I've been walking around with my purse and haven't had any issues. We've had a lovely time. I did see those barriers, and I thought about that because of the cars that can drive through there and crash into a group of people. It happened in Atlanta, it happened in the United States multiple times. So I did appreciate those, actually. Are German Christmas markets safe? Authorities insist they have done everything in their power to ensure the safety of tourists and visitors. We have to strike a balance between fortifying a place like this and at the same time preserving the unique atmosphere that makes a Christmas market so special. Maybe the best way to enjoy the atmosphere is to not think about the safety too much. A cup of mulled wine, the famous Glühwein, definitely helps.
