Tens of thousands of people have been evacuated across the nation, taking refuge in schools and public shelters. Military and police coordinated rescue missions using helicopters and navy boats. Many found themselves trapped upon rooftops. This man was airlifted to safety from the top of a coconut tree. At Anuradhapura prison in central Sri Lanka, more than a thousand inmates were evacuated and relocated. Food and humanitarian aid has begun arriving from India. Its southern state of Tamil Nadu is expected to be Ditwa's next destination. Authorities say they expect the floods to spread even further, exacerbated by strong winds and torrential rains.
