The number of Islamic State fighters in the region is estimated to be in the hundreds, primarily concentrated in the al-Miskat mountains.

The fighters have set up bases in rough terrain where roads are virtually unmotorable and are littered with explosives. But the fight is big and local forces are struggling, often relying on airstrikes by the U.S. military to knock out insurgent camps. To be honest with you, ISIS's greatest headquarter globally is here in these mountains, al-Miskat. I think much of the world doesn't know that we are fighting against international terrorism. These skirmishes involve fierce gun battles. The Islamic State affiliate in Somalia emerged in 2015 as a breakaway faction from al-Shabaab group. On this raid, the soldiers say they have seen evidence of Islamic State cooperation with the Houthis of Yemen. I am confident that there is to an extent a cooperation between the two. We have found letters that indicate this correspondence between the Islamic State group and the Houthis. The number of Islamic State militants in the country are estimated to be in their hundreds, mostly scattered in the al-Miskat mountains in Puntland's Bari region.
