Investigators from the Australian Transport Safety Bureau are examining the wreckage and gathering information on flight data, weather conditions, and maintenance records. The aircraft, which had made several trips in the previous week, crashed under foggy conditions, though it is unclear if the plane's emergency parachute was deployed. A preliminary report on the incident is expected in about two months.

Olivia Blunden is live from the newsroom for us tonight with more on this story, Liv. The rented aircraft took off from Bankstown just before lunchtime but never returned. Sandra, sadly that plane is now a crumpled heap wedged in dense bushland at Wagwag on the south coast, making it extremely difficult for crews from multiple agencies to access on foot. Investigations today ramped up as the focus turned to finding the pilot. He's believed to be aged in his 60s, have some experience flying and was the sole occupant of this 2014 Cirrus SR20 aircraft that was rented from Bankstown Flying School. The school said earlier today it has fond memories of the pilot and it's a torture waiting for an outcome. The plane took off half an hour after schedule yesterday morning around 11 o'clock, flying down over Kosciuszko National Park before crossing the Victorian border near Mallacoota then making its way back up the coast. It was scheduled to arrive back in Bankstown at 3.15pm but at 3 o'clock a distress signal was sent out. The plane is equipped with a parachute system for emergency landings but it's unclear whether it was deployed. The Australian Transport Safety Bureau is bringing in investigators from interstate to examine the wreckage and collect information like flight data, weather conditions and pilot and aircraft maintenance records. This particular aircraft made more than a dozen trips in the last week. The questions now are what went so horribly wrong this time round and whether yesterday's foggy conditions were a catastrophic factor and we'll know more once a preliminary report comes back in about two months' time.
