The agreement, negotiated in Madrid, would see TikTok transferred from its Chinese parent company ByteDance to U.S.-controlled ownership. The deal is expected to be confirmed in a phone call between Chinese President Xi Jinping and former U.S. President Donald Trump. While TikTok remains banned in China, the move is seen as a potential step toward improved relations between the two countries and could signal progress in resolving ongoing trade tensions.

Before there was TikTok, there was Douyin. Launched in 2016, the Chinese video-sharing app now has more than 700 million users. Its early success led to the release of TikTok, the international version of the platform, which has 170 million users in the United States alone. U.S. and Chinese officials say they're now on the cusp of a deal to allow the platform to continue operating in North America, despite a nationwide ban. And people in China have welcomed the news. Because of this agreement, relations between the two countries can improve in a return to normal. I hope there will be more opportunities for exchange and communication. There's actually a growing sense of national pride from people here of like, we have these great things in China that deserve to be enjoyed by a global audience. And so for people to get in the way of that is sort of a disservice to this innovation that's happening in China. Trump has repeatedly extended a self-imposed deadline to reach a deal. He's previously praised the app for helping him win over younger voters in the last U.S. election. TikTok was banned by the Biden administration due to security concerns about U.S.'s citizens' data being accessed by the Chinese government, concerns experts say are valid. In China, there are a suite of national security laws that ensure that there's really no firewall between the data that Chinese tech firms have access to and the Chinese Communist Party, the state itself. TikTok is blocked in China and a deal won't affect Chinese users, but it will be seen as a stepping stone towards more stable ties with the White House and a possible end to the long-running trade war between the two sides.
